Why Star Wars is Always Looking Back Even When It’s Moving Forward

The Book of Boba Fett is just around the corner and might have an interesting place in the Star Wars release calendar, likely being the last Disney Plus series released before Star Wars Celebration in May 2022. And, because it is the only Star Wars series on the horizon after The Bad Batch, there is a lot of focus on the beloved character. Recently, Temuera Morrison did an interview with Rotten Tomatoes and gave a brief description of what The Book of Boba Fett will be about:

Well, we can’t say too much, but we’re going to see his past and where he’s been since The Empire Strikes Back. Somebody pointed out he’s been kind of stuck in this one place, and now’s the time to actually go back in time and check out his journey and find out more about him.

That sounds familiar. The main thing that stood out to me was how meta this is for the Star Wars franchise as a whole. I assumed that there would be flashbacks in the series but it seems like Boba’s past is a bigger part of the show. Although this shouldn’t be too much of a surprise because going back to an established character’s past to find out more about them is all Star Wars has ever done….
